As the dust settles after the 2014 midterm elections, what do this year’s results mean for Nebraska’s population of senior citizens?
The staff at Home Care Assistance in Omaha, Nebraska, always stays up to date on political decisions that affect seniors. That is why we’ve put together this article on what the recent election results may mean for you and your aging loved one.
Overview of Election Results
Right now, there are about 2.3 million seniors in the Cornhusker State. Like most midterms, only about 36% of registered voters turned out at the polls, and more than 65% of those voters were over the age of 50 and part of a powerful senior voting block.
The GOP candidates for Senate, House and gubernatorial races all stayed in office, with only one Democrat winning a Senate seat. Republicans also control the state legislature.
National vs. Local
Unlike several states that turned “red” in the GOP wave, Nebraska looks like it is staying very much the same. That means no immediate changes to Social Security, no sudden increase in taxes, and the likely continued gridlock in Congress means there will be no significant changes to the new health care laws. On the other hand, Nebraska may likely continue its refusal to expand Medicaid. Though health care costs will continue to rise at the slowest rate in 10 years, low income Nebraska seniors will continue to be left out of health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act.
An Economic Bright Spot
Voters in Nebraska overwhelmingly approved an increase in the minimum wage. Seniors may not think they are affected by this change, since most are retired. However, it will boost the state’s overall economy, creating more disposable income for people who provide services to the elderly, which will eventually spur more job growth.
All in all, it’s too early to tell exactly how this year’s midterm results will affect local seniors. But if you stay tuned to our blog we will be sure to keep you filled in on the most important and breaking senior news.
