The leaves are starting to turn beautiful shades of red and orange and the city of Omaha is welcoming milder temperatures, cool breezes and even a bit of rain. Although the weather is starting to cool off to the mid 50s and 60s, it is still important for senior adults to stay active. Not sure what there is to do in Omaha in the fall? Don’t worry! Home Care Assistance of Omaha offers a few activities you or an aging loved one can enjoy in and around our beautiful city.
While the temperatures are still pleasant, take advantage of Omaha’s many free outdoor activities. Stroll across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge; the 3,000 foot long bridge includes 15 foot wide walkways which are easy to navigate and make walking across a breeze for senior adults. In addition to physical exercise, seniors who cross the bridge can enjoy unparalleled views of the river. Also near the bridge is the Heartland of America Park with a 300 foot high fountain, Lewis & Clark Interpretive exhibits, WWII and Airborne Memorial Sculptures.
To escape the outdoors, explore Omaha’s countless museums which are as diverse as they are beautiful. For history buffs, the Durham Museum is a must with one of the world’s rarest coin collections. Seniors can also head to the Strategic Air and Space museum to see prized military aircrafts. Love art? Who doesn’t! Visit the Joslyn Art Museum which features antique collections from the past through today, or to the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art to observe paintings and sculptures created by local artists. Seniors can walk freely around the museums at their own pace and take breaks when necessary, all while staying out of the cold!
Another great option to help seniors stay active is volunteering. We are honored to be an Omaha home care agency in such a tight knit community and want seniors to be aware of the many opportunities to give back and volunteer. From working with non-profits to helping local schools, volunteering is a great way for seniors to stay active, using their knowledge, experience and personal skills to provide helpful service to others in the community. Through volunteering, seniors can also continue to follow their passions and interests while meeting new people.
